Bonus #2 Powerful Networking Conversation Starters
Starting conversations at networking events, whether online or in person, can be a great way to make connections and build relationships. Here are some conversation starters that you can use to initiate meaningful interactions:
In Person Networking: Remember, get the other person talking first! Listen and get to know them, don’t make it sales pitch!
- How did you get started in your career?
- What’s the most interesting part of your job?
- What are you currently doing to promote your business? How is that working for you?
- Any favorite books, podcasts, or movies that you’d recommend for someone looking to learn and grow?
- I’m feeling overwhelmed with all the information shared today, what do you think was most interesting?
- Are you from this area? Can you recommend a good__________?
- What’s the best business advice you’ve ever received?
- What brought you to this event today?
- Is there anything you’d recommend to a newcomer like me attending this event?
- What type of person would be a good referral for you or your type of business?
After the conversation make sure you ask for a business card so you can stay in touch.
Online Networking:
Join social media groups in your target market to make connections. LinkedIn is a great place to start. Guidelines for making connections on LinkedIn, courtesy of Chat GPT
- Personalize the Request: Always personalize your connection requests. Avoid using the generic “I’d like to add you to my professional network” message. Instead, mention something specific that you have in common or that piqued your interest about the person’s profile.
- Introduce Yourself: Start by introducing yourself and explaining your reason for wanting to connect. Mention your name, your current role or profession, and why you think connecting could be beneficial.
- Shared Interests or Goals: Highlight any shared interests, mutual connections, or common professional goals. This can help establish a connection and show that you’ve done your homework.
- Explain the Value: Briefly explain why you believe connecting would be valuable for both parties. It could be a potential collaboration, networking opportunities, or simply staying informed about industry updates.
- Polite Language: Use polite and respectful language throughout your request. Avoid sounding too pushy or demanding.
- Conciseness: Keep your request concise. Aim for a message that’s clear and to the point.
- Proofread: Proofread your message before sending it to avoid any typos or grammatical errors.
This is great
Thank you!
